Short & Sweet Summaries (THIS WILL BE A ANOTHER GOOD ONE!! Ready, set, READ people)
Chapter Thirty-One Summary:
After the landscape, Tris is shaking and feels cold. She is extremely relieved. Eric, Max, Tobias (smiling), and others walk in, congratulating Tris on completing her final evaluation. Eric says that she has to get injected with a tracking device, courtesy of the Erudite, but Tris knows that it’s dangerous. She agrees, however, knowing that she has no other choice. Tobias congratulates her on having only seven fears. Tris becomes nervous and asks Tobias how much they told him about her fear landscape, and he says that he doesn’t know much. Tris doesn’t want to be afraid of him. Tobias and Tris go back to Tobias’ room, where he starts kissing Tris, but she is nervous and scared. Tobias asks her what’s wrong, and Tris says that she sometimes wonders what’s in it for him (as in, dating her). He says that she’s an idiot, but she defends herself saying that it’s weird that he chose her, and that if all he wants is sex, then…Tobias stops her and says that if he were looking for that, she probably wouldn’t be the first person he’d go to. Tris feels horrible, and is about to leave, until Tobias grabs her and apologizes, saying that he meant that she wasn’t like that, which he knew when he met her. Tris tells him he was an obstacle in her fear landscape. Tobias is hurt, believing that she’s afraid of him. Tris says that she has a fear of being with anyone, and since he’s older, she doesn’t know what his expectations are. Tobias says that she’s delusional and that this is all new to him as well. He mentions that she can tell him anything, and that he’s normally kinder than in training. Tris really wants to kiss him back, but she’s afraid of where it might go. Tobias notices a bandage on her shoulder, and Tris shows him her tattoo of Abnegation. Tris tells him that they have to warn Abnegation, and he says that they will. Tobias asks if the situation is scaring her (as in them together) and she says no, and that she’s scared of what she wants, which is him. Tobias asks if maybe one day, is she still wants him, they can…but Tris asks if he’s afraid of her too. Tobias says that he’s terrified, smiling. Tris says that maybe he won’t be in her fear landscape anymore, and Tobias says that they’ll call her Six. They kiss again, but it feels familiar to Tris this time.
Chapter Thirty-Two Summary:
Tris notices that Tobias smiles more after they spent some time together. Tris runs to talk to Christina and Will. Christina tells her that she wants to train initiates as her job, and Will says that he wants to be a Dauntless leader, but feels like it’s impossible to outrank everyone else. Tris says that she wants to be an embassador. Christina tells Tris that there was something in her fear landscape that the leaders were laughing about, and Tris says that she doesn’t know what, but Christina knows that she’s lying. Tris tells her that she was afraid of intimacy. Will laughs, and Tris asks Christina about the moths, which Will finds amusing as well. Eric reveals the list of names, 1. Tris 2. Uriah 3. Lynn 4. Marlene 5. Peter 6. Will 7. Christina, and everyone is happy. Tris notices that Molly and Drew where cut out. Tobias comes to congratulate her, and Tris says that she doesn’t care about anyone knowing about them, so she kisses him. Suddenly, Tris pieces everything together, that the serum, created by the Erudite, has transmitters, and that Eric and Max are working with the Erudite. Tris tells Tobias that she has to tell him something later. Christina and Will stare at Tris, probably because she and Tobias just kissed. Tris knows that the serum is how the Erudite will control the Dauntless.
Chapter Thirty-Three Summary:
Tris tries to find Tobias, but was too tired. She wakes up to find everyone silently getting dressed. She notices that they are being controlled. Tris tries to blend in and mimic them. Max doesn’t notice her at all. They walk into a hall filled with guns. Tris decides that she’ll pretend long enough to get to the Abnegation sector and warn her family. Tris realizes that the Dauntless leaders are all awake, and she is as well, because she is Divergent. That must mean, if correct, that Tobias must be too. She has to find him. Tris gets into the train with the others, and notices Tobias blank-faced, and Tris is disappointed. But then, Tobias laces his fingers through Tris’ and she knows that he’s Divergent, and awake. Getting off of the train, Tobias tells her to run, but Tris mentions her family. Tris is finding it harder and harder to focus, hearing gunshots. She knows that she has to keep walking. Tris sees Tori kill a council member. Eric pokes at Tris making her almost flinch, and then walks by Tobias, pointing his gun at him. Eric is about to shoot Tobias when Tris presses her gun’s barrel into Eric’s forehead. She fires at Eric’s foot, and Tobias fires at another leader’s foot as well. Tris and Tobias run, but Tris gets shot in the shoulder. She tells Tobias to run, but he refuses to leave her. Eric points a gun at them, calling them Divergent rebels, and tells them to surrender their weapons.
Chapter Thirty-Four Summary:
Tris is in too much pain to think about much. Tobias and Tris are herded into a small office, where Jeanine questions Tobias as to how he evaded her suspicion of being Divergent. She thinks that his Divergence is weaker, and Tobias makes a sarcastic remark. Tobias tells her to get on with killing them, but Jeanine says that she has another batch of serum to test, one that could work on the Divergent. Jeanine explains that she couldn’t understand why most of the Divergent where from Abnegation, absolutely disgusted by Abnegation in general. Jeanine wants to control Abnegation and create a new government. Jeanine taunts Tobias about his father. Then, she says that they are needed to test that special batch of serum because it might not work on the Divergent in the Abnegation faction. Tris notices that Jeanine isn’t completely a maniac, but just sees problems and solves them. Jeanine says that Tobias will be the first test, seeing as Tris is too injured and will be killed. Tris see’s the terror in Tobias’ eyes (AWW). Tobias says that he would rather die. Tobias kisses Tris, and lunges across the room, choking Jeanine. Two Dauntless guards pry him off, and one slams Tris into the wall when she tries to help, but she is too weak to do much else. Jeanine injects Tobias. He appears alert, and Jeanine says that he doesn’t recognize Tris. Tobias lunges at Tris and grabs her throat (NO!). Jeanine says that the stimulation manipulates him to confuses his friends for his enemies. The guards hold him back. Jeanine says that he’s more useful that the other mindless sleepwalkers, seeing as he can act independently. They send Tobias to a control room, and Tris to a different room. She bites the hand of one of her guards and smiles triumphantly, but he hits her and knocks her out.
Chapter Thirty-Five Summary:
Tris wakes up in a pile of blood, enclosed in glass. Tris screams and continues to kick at the glass walls surrounding her. Water comes into the bottom of the tank. Tris knows that Erudite want to prove that in real life, she’s a coward. Tris bravely starts at the camera, breathing deeply. Tris submerges herself in the water, relaxing. She thinks about her past, and knows that she isn’t afraid. She sees someone outside the glass, and thinks that it’s her mom. Glass shatters as it’s hit with a bullet. IT IS HER MOM. Tris sees that her mom killed Dauntless guards on her way in. Tris tells her mom that she was Dauntless, and she says yes, smiling. Natalie tells Tris that Caleb and her father are hiding in a basement, and that they have to get to them. Tris runs after her mother. Natalie tells Tris that she has been watching the trains since the Dauntless attack happened, trying to find Tris. Tris asks how she knew about Tris being Divergent, and she says that she was Divergent also, switching to Abnegation because her mother was a Dauntless leader, and told her to leave. Natalie says that the Divergent have different ways of thinking, and it scares leaders because they can’t control them. Tris realizes that she is Divergent, not Dauntless or Abnegation, and therefore, will not be controlled. Natalie says that she will distract the Dauntless long enough for Tris to get to Caleb and her father. Natalie gets shot by the Dauntless (No!). Tris’ world collapses around her, but she bravely gets up and starts running.
Chapter Thirty-Six Summary:
Three soldiers follow her, and she is ready to fire, but one of them is Will. She fires at his head with her eyes closed, knowing that it hit because that’s where she aimed it, and still with her eyes closed, turns around, and runs (WILLLLLLL). Tris feels horrible, and screams and sobs. She gets to the basement and Caleb opens the door, throwing his arms around her. He asks if she’s shot and she tells him they should go inside. She sees her father and Marcus. Caleb is wearing gray again. They tend to Tris’ shoulder as Caleb explains that he researched the serum, found out what Jeanine was going to do, and became factionless, wanting to warn Tris. Her father says that he is not factionless, that he is with them. Her father removes the bullet from Tris’ shoulder as she screams, and Caleb starts laughing, never thinking that he’d see his family together again. Tris tells them that Natalie is gone. Tris knows that her mother’s death was brave, unlike Al’s. Tris knows that it is her duty to lead. Tris explains what is happening with the Dauntless, and says that they have to wake them up by shutting down the computers that control them. Tris realizes the computers are where Tobias went, in the Dauntless headquarters. Tris also realizes that she is not Dauntless or Abnegation, but that she is Divergent. Tris and the group begin to plan.

“Being with you…with anyone. I’ve never been involved with someone before, and…you’re older, and I don’t know what your expectations are, and…” “Tris,” he says sternly, “I don’t know what delusion you’re operating under, but this is all new to me, too.” (402) (HAHA)
“Someday,” he says, “if you want me, we can…” He pauses, clears his throat. “We can…” “Are you afraid of me, too, Tobias?” “Terrified,” he replies with a smile… “Four and Six,” I say. (406-407) (AWW)
“Terrifying,” Will says with mock seriousness. “That’s my girl. Tough as cotton balls.” (411) (HA)
…Will and Christina standing a foot away from me – staring with open mouths, probably because I just kissed Tobias… (415)
And then something peculiar happens: fingers lace with mine, and a palm presses to my palm. Tobias, holding my hand. (420) (NO WAY, SO CUTE)
“My theory is that…your Divergence is weaker.”…I grit my teeth and consider lunging across the table and strangling her. If I didn’t have a bullet in my shoulder, I might. “Your powers of deductive reasoning are stunning,” spits Tobias. “Consider me awed.” (427-428) (YEAH TOBIAS)
I try to hide the shudder that goes through me at the word “execution,” my shoulder screaming with pain, and I look up at Tobias. It’s hard to blink the tears back when I see the terror in Tobias’s wide, dark eyes. (432) (AWWWWWW)
